Electricity can cost the typical family $1,000 or more a year. What might be surprising is that 10% or more of this energy might be wasted on devices that are sitting idle. How do you find these energy sucking demons? Invest $24 in a device like the Kill A Watt that allows you to measure the electric usage of any electronic device. It will take you a couple days but you'll probably find $10 in wasted energy a month that you never knew was costing you money.
Typical culprits are computers, fax machines, stereos and DVD players. There are 720 hours a month that they are burning through your pocket. If you want to lower your cost on the Kill A Watt, split the purchase with a friend. It won't take you more than a week or two to get the bulk of the value and then you can give it to your friend. $12 for $10 a month in savings, that's cheap.
