When you make a reservation, rent a car that is smaller.  Half the time, they won’t have the car in stock as many renters are gas conscious, and they will try to get you to upgrade to a larger size. Pass on the offer and you’ll likely get a midsize anyway and if you don’t, you’ll save on the gas.
