Over the last few years, movie ticket prices have escalated at a faster pace than inflation. If you have kids, going to the movies can run you $50 and that's before you make the obligatory visit to the confectionery stand for overpriced popcorn and pop. But fear not, there's some sweet deals for families that have flexible schedules this summer. Here are 5 of the best covering over 1,000 movie theaters:
The largest movie theater chain in the United States has the best program since 1991. For 9 weeks, morning movies on Tuesday and Wednesday are free at over 500 movie theaters. You have to pick up the tickets at the box office on the day of the movie, but the tickets cost absolutely nothing. Movies range from the Tale of Despereaux, to Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. With 9 weeks and two showing a week, you can get yourself about 35 hours of entertainment for your family for nothing. Just watch out for the pricey concessions.
Carmike is another large chain and has the best combo deal. Movies are $1 but that's also what they'll charge you for popcorn and drinks. Three dollars is all it will take to treat your kid to a day at the movies with all the trimmings. Movies are nearly identical to the other large theaters. One of the shows will be for Tooth Fairy, a fairly recent release.
Cinemark which operates Cinemark, Century, and Tinseltown has one of the best deals. For a solid ten weeks, they'll be charging only at dollar for the weekday 10AM show. 150 of their theaters around the country are participating in their special summer program. If you think $1 is too steep a price, you can cut your costs in half by buying a 10 pack of tickets (1 for each of the ten movies) for $5. Just make sure you intend to attend all the shows. The movie selection varies by theater but there are some pretty good flicks for next to nothing. Most movies are hits from the last two years including Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Alvin & the Chipmunks the Sequel, and Monsters vs. Aliens.
