My furniture is more important than my clothes. Next to your undergarments, there are few things quite as personal as furniture. I might be a bit of a careless dresser, but I’ll be damned if I buy a piece of furniture that won’t stand the test of time.
I like sturdy stuff with clean elegant lines. Furniture should be comfortable, durable and attractive. It should make you proud to own it. If you hold a car for ten years, you should buying furniture that going to look great twenty years from now. So the first rule of cutting down on your furniture expenses is to buy the stuff you absolutely love because you’ll end up holding on to it.
Take your bed. I don’t care how cheap you are - who goes out and buys a used mattress? There are some things that are just purely indecent and a used mattress is definitely one of them. If you are in college, I might give you a pass on that one, but beyond that, you should be getting it new. A good mattress is probably the most important piece of furniture you can invest in. You sleep on the darn thing for 6 to 9 hours a night and yet the same people that skimp on the mattress end up buying a $2,000 love seat that nobody ever uses.
When it comes to a mattress, go high-end from the get go. Buy a firm high quality name brand mattress with at least a 10 year warranty. Nobody since Adam has ever used a mattress warranty but the longer the warranty, the better they seem to make them.
You'll probably get the best deal if you shop around for a luxury brand that received a little damage in shipping.
A last word on mattresses: The mattress industry is rife with scam artists. If you go to a mattress store, you should never even consider the posted price. I don't mean to be impolite, but if you do, you are a sucker. Bid low on the mattress you like and make the salesperson work for his commission.
One of the best places to pick up mattress deals is through the outlets at major department stores. You’ll spend half a day trying to find the right mattress but you’ll likely get a screaming deal.
