A Dozen Ways to Buy Books Cheap
More Tips

7. Get Coupons and Discounts at the Big Name Retailers

When you visit a premium book store like Borders and Barnes & Noble - head for the discounted books first.  You'd be surprised how many good titles are available at 50 - 70% off.  Speaking of these two retailers, join their email clubs as they will send you 40-50% off in-store coupons nearly every week.

8. Shop Online, Beyond Amazon.com

Shop online and don’t restrict yourself to Amazon.com. Try to get free shipping and if it's an out of state vendor, they won't charge you sales tax.  If you do use Amazon, also look at their selection of vendors selling used books cheaply.

9.  Half-Price Books

If you really want to get some fantastic deals, go to the clearance section at a used book store like Half-Price books.

10. Be Picky

Only buy what you’re definitely going to read. A lot of used books are in mint condition precisely because the original reader didn’t crack the cover.  Just because its inexpensive doesn't make it a great deal.

11. Return What You Don't Read

If you decide not to read a book after a few pages, return it.  It's amazing that people will return all sorts of merchandise but they seldom return a book.

12. Extreme Discounts for Popular Titles

Always buy popular titles used at an extreme discount.  Pulp fiction writers like Grisham or Steele sell by the millions so there will be tons of used selection.  I've picked up $25 hardcover popular titles for as little as $2.00.

Buying a used book or a new on clearance is not like buying a used car.   You can buy mint condition used reading material for a song and once you lift the hood and open the covers - you get exactly the same value you would if you had purchased it new.

It doesn't make much sense yet but eBook readers are dropping in price and will be a viable alternative to paper books very soon.

My mum used to go to a Marketstall and swap an old book for a new book for a charge of 50pence (less than $1). She did this for years but sadly it's closed down now.... This kind of system would be great to grow as the library's seem to be closing one by one!
