My daughter desperately wanted her very own digital camera. And I was just as desperate as she was because she'd already used my Nikon D50 to prove Isaac Newton's theory of gravity and I was certain that my child prodigy would continue testing out the well proven theory. I just want the little darling to experiment with her own camera. Well now, the little lady has her "new" digital camera and I'm out less than $20, making both of us very happy.
New
There was a time when 'new' meant unused and 'used' meant previously owned. Today, there are many different gradations of what these terms mean. There is New-Factory Sealed which means that your product has never seen the light of day. Then there is New which means that the package may have been opened but never used. Then there is Like New which means that someone may have used it in the store but it was never really used. Both of these sometimes get referred to as Open Box. There is also something called B stock which can happen on an entirely new factory sealed product that gets returned from one retailer and sold by another. Now in the old days (more than 10 years ago) all of these would have been considered New and the prices would have been the same. People were used to seeing merchandise that had been stuffed back in the box and as long as it had a warranty, we were ok with it. Not today, unless it is hermetically sealed, we don't want to touch it. It probably has something to do with swine flu. But those of us that have taken the swine flu shots have no problem with Open Box merchandise, especially when it comes at a huge discount.
Believe it or not, Like New electronics can often go for 30-40% less than a Factory Sealed item. Not bad. But in my case, I was looking for a digital camera for a kid who would probably find creative ways of feeding it to the dog. So, I needed a huge incentive to keep the little darling happy and that meant shopping for a "Used" camera.
