Eight Reasons to Fall in Love With Your Junk Mail
The Next Four
All Pages

We all complain about it. Some of us have filled out those special forms to stop the junk mail demons from approaching our sacred mail boxes. As for me, junkmailI’m a contrarian - I can’t do without my junk mail. I wait for the mailman with bated breath and pray he stuffs my mail box with all kinds of goodies. I might have a few environmental qualms about the amount of paper that goes to waste, but as far as my wallet is concerned, junk mail is my friend.

Here are eight reasons you shouldn’t thumb your nose at your junk mail.

1. Grocery Circulars

If for nothing else, getting the weekly grocery circulars makes junk mail completely worthwhile. You'll save a bundle by planning your attack before you go to the store. The circulars in the mail often have special coupons not available in the store. And by planning ahead, you'll pick off every super deal without wasting time discovering a deal in aisle 12 when you are in aisle 2. And for the truly frugal, combining the best deals with manufacturer's coupons can mean snagging stuff for free.

2. Oil Change, Tune Ups, and Smog Checks

You should never show up for an oil change without a coupon. If you are paying $29.99, you are probably paying $15 too much. I can’t remember the last time I broke the $20 barrier for an oil change. All thanks to coupons that can save you as much as 50% off the walk-up rate. Same goes for tune ups and smog checks in places like California.

3. Restaurants and Fast Food

Sometimes the best deals can be found in the Clipper type magazines that clutter your mailbox. Even good restaurants will put out coupons for midweek specials such as 'buy one entrée get one free' or 'kids eat free with paying adult.' And if you are heading out to eat at a fast food joint, don’t even think about going out until you’ve scoured the last week’s coupon clipping rags. Can you say $0.99 double cheeseburger? Be selective and look for deals that are at least 30% off.

4. Plumbers

You never know when you’re pipes are going to wreak havoc on your new carpet. It’s usually in the middle of the night. Watch out for coupons from your friendly independent plumber and keep a half dozen of these so at least one of them is available when you call. Plumbers are always looking for new customers and discount heavily on the first visit. Just make sure to do a little due diligence on your plumber before you bother to keep the coupon.

In addition to the story about the carpet cleaners where we paid $300 for a "$50" carpet cleaning that I wrote about in the daily email, watch out for house cleaners.

We tried one of those too one time and the rate that they advertise is for a mythical apartment that doesn't exist. Have two levels, extra charge. Have an extra bathroom, extra charge. Want anything more that the bare minimum, extra charge. In general, we tend not to use home services from the weekly mailers after a couple bad experiences.

Coupons for retailers, auto, jumpy jumps, etc. are great though. We wouldn't do a carpet cleaner or house cleaning service again.

I googled for a cheap price for carpet cleaning. The price given was the price charged.
