Nobody has yet figured out how socks manage to disappear somewhere in the wash cycle. Some people are convinced that they actually make their escape from the dryer. My contacts in the sock underworld tell me that the Sock Lobby pressures appliance manufacturers to build in secret escape routes. I’m not buying it. I think they’re specially trained by the sock industry because every time you lose a single sock – you might as well lose the other pair. That means a whole bunch of people showing up to buy replacement socks.

Whatever the case may be, if you can cut down on your sock losses you can save enough for a down payment on a shoe factory. Allow me to recommend a simple sock strategy – develop a taste for simple 100% high quality socks. Make your entire sock inventory plain. Choose no more than four colors. You’ll still lose the occasional sock until some genius invents some kind of deterrent to this ‘sock’ phenomenon.

The beauty of my sock strategy is that when you do lose one, you don’t have to lose the other pair because it can be reserved to replace another escapee with the same color. Besides, when you’re in a pinch, and you’ve been the victim of a mass sock breakout – you can get away with matching a dark blue sock to a black sock.

There are other ways to save on your wardrobe and still keep it fashionable. The most obvious one is to always buy on sale. Clothes are seasonal. If you buy a winter coat at the end of the season – say in early April - you can usually get it at a very steep discount because retailers put a premium on their shelf space and can’t afford to use it for storage.  They are also very conscious that fashions change – especially for women’s clothing.  You never know what people will be into next year. Once you make a huge dent in the cost your durable wardrobe inventory – coats, suits, top hats and the like – you’re ready for more aggressive tactics.

Figure out what is a "classic" fashion -- something that won't go out of style for years and years. Get that.

It works. I know a retail clerk at the fanciest dept. store in town. (Unlike some stores, this chain does NOT require employees to wear clothing bought there in the last X number of months.) Customers are always asking her where she gets her outfits. She has to mumble something so they don't find out the truth.

This clerk doesn't shop in her own store; she buys clothes secondhand. She knows what brands are the best and gets classic fashions that look good on her. She pays just a few bucks for any garment she buys -- yet looks better than the fashionistas who are shelling out $100s on their outfits.

Anyone can walk into a department store and lay down the cash/credit card for a fashionista wardrobe (come on - the sales people already threw it together for you!) - - It is far more a challenge (and what fun it is!) to find those "diamonds in the rough" and to be able to strut your fabulous stuff (with money left over in your pockets for ... hmm ... let's say ... some real diamonds!!) - Great pointers - tho' I'll pass on warming up my coffee with your microwave -

Like the old saying goes, "don't grocery shop on an empty stomach..." Don't shop in drab clothes. Clothes don't make a person, the person does.

For women, accessorize! A $20 scarf, bracelet or headband can change your look.

scarves are my favorite accessory because many are designs, conservative, flashy, etc. Don't go for broke, go for beautiful!
