Shopping - Online

Normally, I am skeptical of any subscription shopping program. Our shelves are filled with dozens of unopened vitamins because we once signed up for a program that sent us continual "back-up orders" of things that we really didn't need. But Amazon's Subscribe and Save Program is a real winner for certain products.  Read more to find out how to save up to 30% off Amazon's normally low prices.

First, the deals right now with 30% off are incredible. If you have a baby, you'll know what I mean. The biggest sizes of Pampers typically run $40 - $44 for of 176 to 228 diapers. But with the Subscribe and Save 30% discount, you can get a box for as little as $28 (13 to 16 cents a diaper). If you are looking for baby wipes, a Pampers 720 count box that normally will cost you $18 is reduced to $13 (1.8 cents a wipe). We use Pampers, but similar discounts apply to a host of baby product manufacturers: Luvs, Huggies, Seventh Generation all have are covered by the Subscribe and Save 30% off program. Outside of diapers and wipes, there are a whole host of other products that you can get a discount, typically 15% off, for signing up for the program. If you like organic baby food, you can get 15% off Ella's or Earth's Best. Not bad if you don't have time to make your own.

Amazon also has thousands of grocery items ranging from candy to pet food that will give you 15% off the normally low price. You can get everything from Fancy Feast to Red Bull sent to your home at a discounted price. Of course, not everything is a good deal even with 15% off. While Amazon has low prices, sometimes it is significantly higher, even with the discount, than other vendors. As always, check competing prices to see if it really is a deal.

How the Program Works

Amazon allows you to choose a 1, 2, 3, or 6 month interval for shipping you the order. If you aren't sure how often you'll need a product, just choose the 6 month option. The day your item is ready to ship, Amazon will use the retail price on the day less your discount to determine what price is charged. Shipping is free, so the price you see is the price to have it delivered to your front door. Right now, Amazon is offering Free 2 day shipping to many of their customers so it really can be a great deal if you routinely buy certain items.

Amazon also doesn't try to trick you or make it hard to cancel. They send an email in advance of your order and they let you instantly cancel if you don't want the next shipment. Theoretically, any item that you order that is eligible for the program can be subsequently cancelled and you'll still get the discount.

Is it worth it? For some items, it definitely is. For baby stuff, the prices are hard to beat. For other products, the quantities and savings probably don't pencil out for the average family. Does any family go through three 64 ounce jars of mayo in 6 months....wait a second, don't answer that!

Been there - done that  - Rotten Customer Service |2010-09-03 12:53:15
Have you ever had to deal with Amazon's customer service? After 15 calls, you can, if lucky, get someone who speaks understandable English & is not reading from a script. I would NOT recommend Amazon - you'll be sorry & they can't or won't correct problems with orders.
