A few years ago, I landed a job in New Zealand. Part of my compensation package was a trip home to Seattle every few months. Instead of buying a regular coach ticket to Seattle, I opted to pay a few hundred dollars more and booked a round-the-world ticket for $1800. It’s an incredible rush to visit Sydney, Hong Kong, Cairo, Frankfurt, London, Seattle and Wellington in 15 days. I might have spent a few extra hours in the air but the shorter flights more than made up for it by cutting down on the jet lag. My ticket would have allowed me to squeeze in a side trip to Buenos Aires or Hawaii. Alas, I was a professional in my early forties and had to get back to work. In my younger days, I would have had the luxury of booking a three month trip with fifteen stops. So many places – so little time. So travel cheap and travel young, you will never forget it.

1) Eurorail Child/Youth Passes - Saves a bundle (typically 30-50%) over the "adult" pass, but only available to those 25 yrs and under!

2) Youth Hostels - You'll never want to stay in these cheap places again after you get old and soft, so take advantage of the rock bottom prices while you're young and limber. Take it from me, as someone who is now old and soft. Towards the end our final "roughing it" trip (to Patagonia), as we were checking out of our final hostel stay of the trip, my wife turned to me and said, that was really cheap but we're getting too old for this. We're staying in that place across the way with the marble lobby and hot tub next time.
