The first thing I did was panic. I was certain I was a victim to identity theft. Some diabolical SOB must have gotten hold of my checking account information and he had to have known I was out of town and wouldn’t be checking my monthly account statements. There were two withdrawals on my monthly statements for three months running. Which meant I was being billed $12 a month for some membership program called Shopper Discounts & Rewards and an additional $12 a month for another program called Reservation Rewards.

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met who’ve never been to New York City. Of course, some of the people I’m talking about are from New Jersey and we’ll have to address their troubles in another article. But seriously, a lot of people avoid the city like the plague and one of the chief reasons is that it’s considered exhorbitantly expensive. I'm going to show you how the Big Apple can be downright cheap, if you know how to snag good deals.

It happens every time you try to book an international ticket. You shop around for the cheapest fare but the airlines hit you with the long layover penalty. “You want that cheap seat mister - it’ll cost you a twelve hour layover in Madrid.” Sometimes they’ll intimidate you with a 10 hour layover in Amsterdam or Paris. You get the picture - you could end up spending an entire day staring at planes in London or Rome. If they’re really nasty, they might threaten you with a 14 hour layover in New York, in the middle of a snowstorm.
The idea of spending 12 monotonous hours in an international terminal waiting for your next flight is not everybody’s cup of tea. On the other hand, if you have time on your hands, a long layover in Madrid or Amsterdam or any other major European or American hub can be a bonus. What you save on the fare is more than enough to spend a lovely day being an accidental tourist in a charming European city.

From a reader in Arizona, "Can you help me? Last year was hard on my family moneywise. Each year we take a week vacation to Disney, Colorado, or the California coast. This year, money is tight and our plan is to skip the vacation and stay home. My husband wants to still go, but we definitely can't afford it. Looking for ideas for a cheaper vacation that's cooler than 110 in the summer. Thanks. J."

How many Americans have really seen America? I'm talking about the 'fly over' states - the ones you see from the window on that six hour flight from New York to Los Angeles. Did you ever wonder what they really look like up close and personal? Good luck getting a peek at Montana without a three connection flight that costs you your firstborn. Want to see America on the cheap - try Amtrak.
